WHEN STUPIDITY BECOMES LAW

Sometimes I think I came back home in the nick of time.

“Tennessee, you will recall, is the proud home of the famous “Monkey Trial of 1925” in which John Scopes, a high school science instructor, was prosecuted for teaching evolution. These days the forces of anti-thinking don't simply deny the science, they demand that ignorance be given equal time. David Fowler, a former state senator and head of the Family Action Councli of Tennessee who helped craft the bill aided and abetted by a creationist front group called (with no discernable irony) the Discovery Institute, complains that Tennessee textbooks call the Genesis story a "creation myth" – as opposed to revealed truth. Moreover, teachers don't present a "balanced" view of evolution. They don't present a "balanced" view of the laws of gravity, the speed of light and the fact that the earth revolves around the sun, either. And speaking of heliocentrism, James Inhofe of Oklahoma likes to compare himself to Galileo Galilei. He's persecuted for proclaiming that "global warming is a hoax". The form of his persecution is somewhat unclear: he's a US senator rolling in cash courtesy of oil and gas corporations. This somehow qualifies him to say that while 97% of climate scientists accept anthropogenic climate change, that "doesn't mean anything". His peer-reviewed journal of choice is the Bible: "Genesis 8:22: 'as long as the earth remains there will be springtime and harvest, cold and heat, winter and summer, day and night'. The arrogance of people to think that we, human beings, would be able to change what He is doing in the climate is to me outrageous." While it's just plain wrong to allow that any of these exceedingly odd people's proclamations about the literal truth of most of the Bible's many and varied prejudices have any validity at all, particularly the ones they love to trot out concerning sexual morality and anthropological history, those who espouse the case for urgent attention to the problem of extreme climate change would do well to drop the exhortation to "Save the Planet", because whatever happens, the planet is 99.9% guaranteed to be here for many more billions of years. It doesn't need saving, it's the human species and mammals in particular that will be in trouble, along probably with most of the birds and the fish. Preliminary evidence suggests that down at the microscopic level life may well adapt and maybe the whole evolutionary cycle will start up again - maybe it already did and this is already one of many go-arounds over the last few billion years. The only certain thing is that the planet itself will keep going, whatever happens to us. It doesn't need saving, even if we do.
