Patti Smith delivered the following during a recent performance of Rock and Roll Nigger in San Francisco. (Sent by Munz)
'To be outside of society is a lot of responsibility. To be a sacred bum of art, a sacred bum of the earth, we can't stumble like some disconnected abstract telephone. We have to wire up, we have to look each other in the face, we have to let our numbers be known, we have to find our brothers and sisters, we have to strengthen our numbers, we have to rise up, and a new generation, they will rise up. Which way will they rise up? With an air of positivity? If we don't give it to them, every fucking thing will burn! We have got to give them something. We have got to give them some hope. We have got to give them some recognition, that they are alive, that they matter, that they're not just a bunch of mindless consumers. We have to give them love, we have to give them an example, we have to get clean, we have to get tough, we have to get ready, because if the revolution comes, man, we're going to be there and ready! AWAKE! AWAKE! Outside of society…”
We the people, we must be a thorn in the side of the Bush administration...'

and in a unrelated/related story concerning Obama, McCain, Bush & Cheney. It's getting creepy:

Do we really have to be clean for the revolution? I'd rather be loaded on the barricades.
and there also seems to be a weird rumour that Dick Cheney had something to do with the war in Georgia, and that it would somehow benefit John McCain. I have no link to confirm this.
Yeah, too bad Chairman Patti sees Ralph Nader as the key to the revolution, though.
More useless pseudo-hippie, "...fight the MAN!" bullshit from someone who should be old enough to have realized she IS 'the man'.
That whole tired "...we're 'gonna have a revolution, man!" idiocy is for confused young people who have no idea how the REAL world works.
Patti, come back from Fantasyland, sweetheart. The 60s ended a long time ago.
Yes, the sixties ended a long time ago. Odd that it's spirit is still being kicked to death by 21st century realists.
Idealism is just too inconvenient for realists.
And how does the REAL world work? From what I see, it doesn't seem to be working very well.
And they're so illiterate. This one thinks the hippies invented revolution.
This shit... who ever this Patti person is, talking about being outside society & sacred bums of whatever, at some venue, in a place as developed & monetarily affluent as San Fransico... where, I'm presuming the audience had to pay a cover charge to get in...
Am I the only person who can see the irony?
The REAL world runs on irony.
Hey, leave patti alone! She's not even a hippie for crissakes thass just her rimbaudian call to arms.
We're all the man, baby. but some of us rattle our shackles louder.
Doesn't the REAL world run of greed, stupidity, fear, and permanent war?
Not according to this wikipedia page... it was a show on the cable & the televisions!

So I read the link posted above by Mark and I read the Daily Kos story and then I read the comments and all I found was a bunch of bleating liberals crying about how Middle America will vote for McCain because he wants to go to war with Russia and Obama can't win and we're all going to die, woe-woe. Sheeit. What happened to putting up a fight? Give me a sixties radical any day of the year. Those were the days when the REAL world meant getting drafted and dying in the jungle. Now Ben Stiller thinks it's funny.
One can still count on Ms. Smith to start a ruckus.
I can't wait for the post revolutionary terror when we get to round up realists and shoot them.
Now you're talking.
Just tell us who you want clipped and they're history.
I'm confused.
I've always thought the "real" world WAS the one outside society. And what society has hijacked, plasticized and shopping-mauled (thank you, munz) is just a fascimile of it.
Inside looking out? Outside looking in? Wondering what's real and what is not?
If anybody calls me a liberal again I will never return to this blog again. Maybe only as Hilly Krystal.
<_<
>_>

Play nicely, people, we're trying to have a insurection here. (And Mark, since I started the bit, I don't think you're a liberal.)
Thanks Lefty. i'm just riding the copper wave. I don't like the world around me and I don't know how to behave.
Patti can tell you better than me.
i just won the most pretentious comment award.
