People ask me how come I never seem to listen any music from the 21st century, and all I can do is just shrug, and offer the only answer I have. “When they start playing shit like this shit, I’ll start listening.” This first clip of Jimi Hendrix on the Lulu Show (thanks Noudela) is unique in that we see a musician completely take over an MOR TV pop show and turn it on its ass until – as Jimi remarks at the end – they take him off the air. Also included is some stoned and impromptu goof on Hound Dog. Oh, Voodoo Child, what a waste, what a waste.

I tried to argue with you. 'Like, uh, kids today are still doin' it, but, uh, in a different style.' Then I watched the video.
Here's what's painful, somewhere out there there's a kid with all of the talent and all of the charisma of Jimi Hendrix, and the world is crushing his/her heart and molding him/her into just another worker bee. The music industry, and the rest of the fuckin' world, has no room for a phenomenon on the scale of Jimi Hendrix.
One more thing. I had forgotten what a jazz band they were. I very clearly remember the first time I heard Jimi Hendrix. I was 13, listening to BBC shortwave, when "Third Stone From The Sun" came on. I didn't think it was rock at all. I heard the bass and drums and thought I was hearing a jazz band. I pictured a trio of Thelonious Monk looking guys with goatees and berets. I'd never heard a guitar sound like that before. I thought it was some kind of distorted saxophone. A little ways into the song, I finally realized it was a guitar.
Sorry for the autobiographical comments, but you really know how to stir my memory.
Among many other things, that Lulu Show video is a very strong argument against ProTools.

Kass is right, Jon. Stories about where we were when we first heard Hendrix and suchlike are part of what Doc40 is all about.
I've never understood the concept that "new" and "contemporary" are automatically superior. There are Dark Ages and there are Renaissances.
I saw Jimi on January 1st, 1970, early show with The Band of Gypsies at the Fillmore East. I've seen nothing like him since. Same goes for my experiences with Morrison, the Stones (when they seemed to give a shit), the Airplane, the Band, et al.
Step up to the plate, young motherfuckers. If you're such hot shit then burn these giants.

Reminded me of the first gig I ever went to - The Nice at Sunderland Empire. I only wish I'd seen Jimi gigging with Emerson around that time.
