I'll be playing this show tomorrow (Saturday) with Andy Colquhoun and Jaki Windmill. It'll be my first public outing since I got sick.

AND YOU THOUGHT ROCK & ROLL COULD START RIOTS?
Our pals at Delancey Place send over this account of the riotous premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite Of Spring.
"All the excitement [of Igor Stravinsky's early career] was nothing against the impact of Le Sacre du printemps, which had its premiere on May 29, 1913 [when he was thirty]. Stravinsky had conceived the idea for it while working on Firebird. 'I dreamed of a scene of pagan ritual in which a chosen sacrificial virgin danced herself to death.' Work on Le Sacre was dropped for Petrushka, but Stravinsky soon resumed work on the new ballet. (He has said that The Coronation of Spring would be closer to his original meaning than the usual translation, The Rite of Spring.) Vaslav Nijinsky was the choreographer, and the premiere resulted in the most famous scandale in the history of music. Hardly anybody in the audience was prepared for a score of such dissonance and ferocity, such complexity and such rhythmic oddity.
"Nobody connected with the production had the faintest idea that the music would provoke a visceral reaction. As soon as the bassoon ended its phrase in the high register, at the very opening of the ballet, laughter broke out. Soon there were whistles and catcalls. Nobody could hear the music. Diaghilev had the electricians switch the house lights off and on, in an effort to restore order. Nijinsky, in the wings, yelled the rhythms to the dancers. The Comtesse de Pourtales stood in her box, brandishing her fan, and shouted: 'This is the first time in sixty years that anybody has dared make fun of me.' People hurled insults at each other. The Apaches, [a musical school of thought] headed by Ravel, shrieked their praise. Stravinsky himself, in his Expositions and Developments, has described the famous evening at the Theatre des Champs-Elysees:
"Mild protests against the music could be heard from the very beginning of the performance. Then, when the curtain opened ... the storm broke. Cries of 'Ta gueule' (shut up!) came from behind me. I heard Florent Schmitt shout 'Taisez-vouz garces du seizieme' (be quiet, bitches of the sixteenth!); the 'garces' of the sixteenth arondissement were, of course, the most elegant ladies in Paris. The uproar continued, however, and a few minutes later I left the hall in a rage; I was sitting on the right near the orchestra, and I remember slamming the door. I have never again been that angry. The music was familiar to me; I loved it, and I could not understand why people who had not yet heard it wanted to protest in advance. I arrived in a fury backstage, where I saw Diaghilev flicking the house lights in a last effort to quiet the hall. For the rest of the performance I stood in the wings behind Nijinsky holding the tails of his frac while he stood on a chair shouting numbers to the dancers like a coxswain.” -- Harold C. FRANK MILLER IS REVEALED AS PORCINE
The above is a response to the below – a vitriolic and reactionary post by Frank Miller, creator of The Dark Knight, on his blog. And to think I used the think Miller was cool (at least until 300) but this evokes nothing but contempt. (Click here if it's hard to read.)
“The “Occupy” movement, whether displaying itself on Wall Street or in the streets of Oakland (which has, with unspeakable cowardice, embraced it) is anything but an exercise of our blessed First Amendment. “Occupy” is nothing but a pack of louts, thieves, and rapists, an unruly mob, fed by Woodstock-era nostalgia and putrid false righteousness. These clowns can do nothing but harm America. “Occupy” is nothing short of a clumsy, poorly-expressed attempt at anarchy, to the extent that the “movement” – HAH! Some “movement”, except if the word “bowel” is attached - is anything more than an ugly fashion statement by a bunch of iPhone, iPad wielding spoiled brats who should stop getting in the way of working people and find jobs for themselves. This is no popular uprising. This is garbage. And goodness knows they’re spewing their garbage – both politically and physically – every which way they can find. Wake up, pond scum. America is at war against a ruthless enemy.”

SOME IMAGES ARE TOO GOOD NOT TO SHARE
As my convalesence continues this came from Some Girl…
"Black rhinos are bulky, earthbound animals—but lately, the lumbering pachyderms have taken part in some pretty impressive aerial acrobatics. Nineteen of the endangered rhinos have taken thousand-mile trips across South Africa while dangling upside down from helicopters." (Click here for the whole story and video)

EVEN WHILE RECUPERATING FROM MY ALMOST NEARLY NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE I CAN’T HELP BUT REFLECT (Episode 3)…
I have been noticing the marked media reluctance to cover the Occupy movement, but this – from our local Brighton SchNEWS – is a winner…
“For a mainstream American TV network showing live aerial feed from a breaking news event, running out of helicopter fuel moments before it all finally kicks off may be regarded a misfortune. For two network choppers to run out simultaneously – well that looks like more than mere carelessness (apols. to Oscar Wilde). This strange turn of events is just what happened this week as two separate blind-eyes-in-the-sky, previously circling over the Occupy Oakland protests for ABC and CBS news, both suddenly cut transmissions and returned to base - citing a lack of gas. Minutes later the cops moved in and attacked the protesters with batons and teargas, from which reports of much unsavoury police brutality emerged. Americans were spared Arab Spring-style scenes of protest repression and only short clips later appeared on news broadcasts. Huge coincidence or state forces at work – you decide! Occupy’ers should always hold on to another Wilde-ism: “An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all.”

I'M NOT DEAD
I posted this Facebook earlier this evening…
“Oh my friends and oh my foes (and the multitude between) I just spent ten days in the Royal Sussex Hospital with a collapsed lung and a mighty appreciation of socialized medicine. I’m back home now, taking fistfuls of meds and gradually recovering but I fear it will be a few more days before the ancient delinquent is back on the Doc40/Facebook hamster wheel.”

PIKACHU OUTED
I stole this from Dangerous Minds because it too good to pass up, plus I figured we all need to know the truth if Pikachu is indeed the Spawn of Satan. I spent too much TV time back in the 20th century trying to figure out Pokémon to really no avail. Now I apparently know I can only wonder I feel?
Bert Jansch -- RIP
REMEMBERING PROHIBITION
And talking about how I or it feels – and having lived under recreational drug prohibition for my entire long life, I have often wondered how it must have felt to wake up on that dire morning of January 16, 1919 and face the reality there was no more legal alcohol. Now our pals at Delancey Place fill us in…
"The streets of San Francisco were jammed. A frenzy of cars, trucks, wagons, and every other imaginable form of conveyance crisscrossed the town and battled its steepest hills. Porches, staircase landings, and sidewalks were piled high with boxes and crates delivered on the last possible day before trans- porting their contents would become illegal. The next morning, the Chronicle reported that people whose beer, liquor, and wine had not arrived by midnight were left to stand in their doorways 'with haggard faces and glittering eyes.' Just two weeks earlier, on the last New Year's Eve before Prohibition, frantic celebrations had convulsed the city's hotels and private clubs, its neighborhood taverns and wharf side saloons. It was a spasm of desperate joy fueled, said the Chronicle, by great quantities of 'bottled sunshine' liberated from 'cellars, club lockers, bank vaults, safety deposit boxes and other hiding places.' Now, on January 16, the sunshine was surrendering to darkness. ..."There were of course those who welcomed the day. The crusaders who had struggled for decades to place Prohibition in the Constitution celebrated with rallies and prayer sessions and ritual interments of effigies representing John Barleycorn, the symbolic proxy for alcohol's evils. No one marked the day as fervently as evangelist Billy Sunday, who conducted a revival meeting in Norfolk, Virginia. Ten thousand grateful people jammed Sunday's enormous tabernacle to hear him announce the death of liquor and reveal the advent of an earthly paradise. 'The reign of tears is over,' Sunday proclaimed. 'The slums will soon be only a memory. We will turn our prisons into factories and our jails into storehouses and corncribs. Men will walk upright now, women will smile, and the children will laugh. Hell will be forever for rent.” From Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent (Scribner)

OCCUPATION TIME
Dare we think this is finally the change?
“In 2009, President Obama told a group of 13 bankers "my administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks." Now the pitchforks are being tuned. It hasn't escaped notice of the 99% that while 1,000 top officers were jailed after the Savings and Loan debacle, not a single bankers has been jailed for their role in collapsing the global economy. The only firm really punished in the entire affair was Lehman Brothers, allowed to fail by Bush's Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. When Obama took over, he failed to crack down on Wall Street, he failed to even tag the Banksters as the culprits for the global economic meltdown. Rather he praised Goldman Sach's LLoyd Blankfein and JP Morgan Chase's Jamie Dimon as friends and "savvy businessmen." Into the void, stepped the GOP who made huge gains at the federal and state level in 2010. Never shy, the GOP stepped right up to name the culprits -- us. Now in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, teachers, firefighters, nurses and other public workers are fighting for their lives -- in utter disbelief that they are being blamed as the cause of the economic downturn. The poor, the elderly and working families are being asked to pay more to close state budget shortfalls, while radical governors shell out billions in tax breaks. The young people in Zuccotti are standing up to say enough is enough.” (Click here for the whole story)
