I'M NOT DEAD

I posted this Facebook earlier this evening…

Oh my friends and oh my foes (and the multitude between) I just spent ten days in the Royal Sussex Hospital with a collapsed lung and a mighty appreciation of socialized medicine. I’m back home now, taking fistfuls of meds and gradually recovering but I fear it will be a few more days before the ancient delinquent is back on the Doc40/Facebook hamster wheel.”

PIKACHU OUTED

I stole this from Dangerous Minds because it too good to pass up, plus I figured we all need to know the truth if Pikachu is indeed the Spawn of Satan. I spent too much TV time back in the 20th century trying to figure out Pokémon to really no avail. Now I apparently know I can only wonder I feel?

REMEMBERING PROHIBITION

And talking about how I or it feels – and having lived under recreational drug prohibition for my entire long life, I have often wondered how it must have felt to wake up on that dire morning of January 16, 1919 and face the reality there was no more legal alcohol. Now our pals at Delancey Place fill us in…

"The streets of San Francisco were jammed. A frenzy of cars, trucks, wagons, and every other imaginable form of conveyance crisscrossed the town and battled its steepest hills. Porches, staircase landings, and sidewalks were piled high with boxes and crates delivered on the last possible day before trans- porting their contents would become illegal. The next morning, the Chronicle reported that people whose beer, liquor, and wine had not arrived by midnight were left to stand in their doorways 'with haggard faces and glittering eyes.' Just two weeks earlier, on the last New Year's Eve before Prohibition, frantic celebrations had convulsed the city's hotels and private clubs, its neighborhood taverns and wharf side saloons. It was a spasm of desperate joy fueled, said the Chronicle, by great quantities of 'bottled sunshine' liberated from 'cellars, club lockers, bank vaults, safety deposit boxes and other hiding places.' Now, on January 16, the sunshine was surrendering to darkness. ..."There were of course those who welcomed the day. The crusaders who had struggled for decades to place Prohibition in the Constitution celebrated with rallies and prayer sessions and ritual interments of effigies representing John Barleycorn, the symbolic proxy for alcohol's evils. No one marked the day as fervently as evangelist Billy Sunday, who conducted a revival meeting in Norfolk, Virginia. Ten thousand grateful people jammed Sunday's enormous tabernacle to hear him announce the death of liquor and reveal the advent of an earthly paradise. 'The reign of tears is over,' Sunday proclaimed. 'The slums will soon be only a memory. We will turn our prisons into factories and our jails into storehouses and corncribs. Men will walk upright now, women will smile, and the children will laugh. Hell will be forever for rent.” From Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition by Daniel Okrent (Scribner)

OCCUPATION TIME

Dare we think this is finally the change?

“In 2009, President Obama told a group of 13 bankers "my administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks." Now the pitchforks are being tuned. It hasn't escaped notice of the 99% that while 1,000 top officers were jailed after the Savings and Loan debacle, not a single bankers has been jailed for their role in collapsing the global economy. The only firm really punished in the entire affair was Lehman Brothers, allowed to fail by Bush's Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson. When Obama took over, he failed to crack down on Wall Street, he failed to even tag the Banksters as the culprits for the global economic meltdown. Rather he praised Goldman Sach's LLoyd Blankfein and JP Morgan Chase's Jamie Dimon as friends and "savvy businessmen." Into the void, stepped the GOP who made huge gains at the federal and state level in 2010. Never shy, the GOP stepped right up to name the culprits -- us. Now in states like Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan, teachers, firefighters, nurses and other public workers are fighting for their lives -- in utter disbelief that they are being blamed as the cause of the economic downturn. The poor, the elderly and working families are being asked to pay more to close state budget shortfalls, while radical governors shell out billions in tax breaks. The young people in Zuccotti are standing up to say enough is enough.” (Click here for the whole story)

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

As I slice the grapefruit and prepare to add the vodka, I have to ask myself – who are these people? Who are these bankers who are currently running round the USA seeking immunity for crimes neither revealed or investigated? Who are these people? Who are these brokers who hold the planetary economy to ransom by threatening crash the markets in a lemming-gavotte panic at the slightest whiff of some neo-Keynesian New Deal public deficit spending to create jobs, expand the tax base, and save capitalism? Who are these people? Who are these Eurocrats who seem more than happy to allow entire countries to fall apart and let Greek children go without health care and education in the name of some semantic absurdity called fiscal restraint? Who are these people? Who are these people who unlike the rest of us feel no loyalty to kith, kin, country, species, or the world in which they expect to live with rest of as we are consigned to pauper hell? Who are these people? Who are these people who are prepared to served no cause beyond their own monumental, obscene, but increasingly abstract greed? Who are these people? Will someone point them out to me so we can drag them behind the bicycle sheds and fire 9mm hollow-point slugs from a handy handgun into the backs of their worthless skulls?

THE ROLLER COASTER OF DEATH

Actually the picture is of a relatively harmless ride. So far the Euthanasia Coaster only exists as a diagram. See below.

“The Euthanasia Coaster, designed by London's Royal College of Art's student Julijonas Urbonas, lets you ride the last ride of your life. Literally. The three-minute ride involves a long, slow, climb -- nearly a third of a mile long -- that lifts one up to a height of more than 1,600 feet, followed by a massive fall and seven strategically sized and placed loops. The final descent and series of loops take all of one minute. But the gravitational force -- 10 Gs -- from the spinning loops at 223 miles per hour in that single minute is lethal. According to Urbonas, the "Euthanasia Coaster is a hypothetic euthanasia machine in the form of a roller coaster, engineered to humanely -- with elegance and euphoria -- take the life of a human being." Euthanasia Coaster isn't simply meant to be about death. Urbonas sees it as both an intellectual and artful departure from the world, one that isn't about the paperwork and medical issues of the current euthanasia system. The few places where voluntary euthanasia is legal include: Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington. "There is no special ritual, nor is death given special meaning except that of the legal procedures and psychological preparation. It is like death is divorced from our cultural life…" Urbonas writes. "…But if it is already legal, why not to make it more meaningful?"

WHEN REALITY TEETERS ON THE BRINK OF HALLUCINATION

Physical recovery is somewhat akin to climbing the smooth sides of a deep and badly lit conical pit in which one is never totally certain any given object or concept is quite what it appears and slipping back is always a possibility. Especially when pit is in the realm of King Ognik.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

I recover but my physicians and others who know tell me it’ll take time and warn me about raising anything like a towering fury over the grim stupidity of the conservative destruction of our global economy lest I relapse. But I am clearly getting better because I’m bored and the image of an egg conjures irrational and uncalled-for memories of Dean Swift, Lilliput, and Gulliver's bloody Travels

“An intra-Lilliputian quarrel which involved a quarrel over the practice of breaking eggs. Formerly, in Lilliput, all eggs were broken on the larger end; but a few generations in the past, an Emperor of Lilliput had decreed that all eggs be broken on the smaller end. The differences between Big-Endians (those who broke their eggs at the larger end) and Little-Endians had given rise to "six rebellions... wherein one Emperor lost his life, and another his crown".

Two days ago, Paul Krugman reported in The New York Times

“During Monday’s G.O.P. presidential debate. CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked Representative Ron Paul what we should do if a 30-year-old man who chose not to purchase health insurance suddenly found himself in need of six months of intensive care. Mr. Paul replied, “That’s what freedom is all about — taking your own risks.” Mr. Blitzer pressed him again, asking whether “society should just let him die.” And the crowd erupted with cheers and shouts of “Yeah!”

SUNDAY BREAKFAST (Two Weeks Later)

Just to remind me never to stop expecting the unexpected, I am right now recovering from the painful zap of a big bad bout of pleurisy on top of my already existing Doc Holliday lung condition. Although not actually life-threatening, the episode put a decided crimp in my pursuit of happiness, and a temporary but highly significant slow-down on my creative endeavors. This is my first outing to the internet in two weeks and I'm currently still hiding from Facebook etc. to avoid a deluge of well-wishers wanting answers and explanations. I guess I’ll maybe get to that later today or tomorrow if I have the strength. My doctor (bless her and the socialized medicine she brought to my aid) has told me to take it really easy for a few more days but, after that, I fear I will be forced to face the fearful catch-up of all that I have failed to accomplish.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

Pony Girl drinks before she continues her rides to the high frontier – or maybe she is ridden to the ragged sky and up a cloudy draw – certainly motivated by her own driving inner soul, lost but found just as Sunday now finds me in a condition of giddy disheveled surrealism were all control is lost and I take my instruction from gravity and the flood and I am pleased to comply because it is a indoor relief in these externally dire times to be able to stop making sense and let the sentences spill into the clear September air, unconstricted by the confines of desperate isolation. The rain comes and goes to the point that I am no longer required to believe that it will rain forever, and I will again sip a Campari and soda at my leisure amid the bright blooms in garden of earthly delights, and there will always be water for Pony Girl when she pauses.
