IT’S SATURDAY – TIME FOR THE MUTANT CHICKENS…

Okay so the 21st century is plainly a science fiction movie, but does it have to be a bad science fiction movie?

“Its head looks like a turkey's, its body resembles a chicken's -- now scientists can explain why one of the poultry world's most curious specimens has developed such a distinctive look. The Transylvanian naked neck chicken -- once dubbed a Churkey or a Turken because of its hybrid appearance -- has developed its defining feature because of a complex genetic mutation. Researchers at The Roslin Institute at The University of Edinburgh found that a vitamin A-derived substance produced around the bird's neck enhanced the effects of the genetic mutation. This causes a protein -- BMP12 -- to be produced, suppressing feather growth and causing the bird to have an outstanding bald neck. The findings could help poultry production in hot countries, including in the developing world, because chickens with naked necks are much better equipped to withstand the heat.” Click here for more.

WITH FRIENDS LIKE THIS WHO NEEDS FACEBOOK?

As we’ve seen with a vengeance over the last few days, disinformation is the name of the 21st century game, but now the deceptions come closer to where we live. This item was sent by our pal Bernard about the same time as I found it myself. I’m glad we’re all thinking alike.

“The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda. A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world. The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives. The discovery that the US military is developing false online personalities – known to users of social media as "sock puppets" – could also encourage other governments, private companies and non-government organisations to do the same. The Centcom contract stipulates that each fake online persona must have a convincing background, history and supporting details, and that up to 50 US-based controllers should be able to operate false identities from their workstations "without fear of being discovered by sophisticated adversaries". SCENES FROM AN APOCALYPSE

I was going to say that I don’t know what to think, but the truth is that I suspect I’m avoiding thinking. An anonymous Fukushima worker is reported as saying he “was not afraid to die, that that was his job.” In Tokyo, our friend Yukiko now sounds desperate. “Re the nuclear plants, it's hopeless.” In China crowds line up to buy iodine salt in anticipation of a real or imagined radioactive cloud. In California, our pal Elf Hellion tells how the panic is more sophisticated and supplies of potassium iodide have been bought up to protect against jet-steam born radiation. My own TV observation is that the helicopters dumping seawater on the reactor seems more like a last-stand gesture than a solution, and a small voice notes that the Japanese mega-quake may not be the only seismic event along the ring of fire. The commentary I’ve just been reading all seems to be slightly smug, Green anti-nuke “I told you so” which may be very true, but somehow seems inappropriate in midst of such massive grief, anxiety, and actual misery. So much of this talk – especially in the US – is also so very national-centric. “Can it happen here?” Am I the only one who sees Fukushima as the trigger point of what must be considered a global calamity?

LETTER FROM TOKYO

Departing from the usual Doc40 fun format, the following are some lengthy quotes from our good friend Yukiko-san in Tokyo which I present in the hope that it will bring a different perspective from much of the nonsense coming out of the TV.

“I have a niece, a biologist working in an academic district called Tsukuba in Ibaraki Prefecture, which is located just south of Fukushima Prefecture and the nuclear plant stands. Her husband is also a biologist working at the same pharmaceutical company as his wife. Hearing the very first news about the damage of the atomic plant, the two scientists decided to evacuate from the city, jumped in the car, and headed for Tokyo since they were "unable to believe TEPCO (the operator of the plant) and the government that no radiation leak had been detected".

Our normally calm correspondent flashes angrily at the mendacity of bureaucrats.

”To make this picture grimmer, watching the Q&A on TV between the press and NISA (Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency), which is supposed to be "the regulatory body for safety of nuclear energy and industrial activities" (from their website), I could perfectly understand the frustration of the press. Usually, my evaluation of the Japanese press is very poor and I've never liked those press guys, but this time only, I totally understood their irritation toward NISA: It was simply mind-boggling seeing HOW INCAPABLE AND STUPID BUREAUCRATIC SHIT THESE PEOPLE ARE and I was just dumbstruck with the fact that the safety of the nuclear power control in this country is on the hands of these MORONS, one of whom didn't even know the accurate count on the measured data.

”Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures have a serious electricity shortage, so TEPCO has rolled out a massive blackout program that includes suspension of a good part of the major train/subway lines in greater Tokyo, already causing significant confusion at every station this morning for. The electricity shutdown is supposed to continue for another few months, dividing the city into areas to be blacked out in turn, but nobody including TEPCO can tell for sure in well advance whether the power cut because the necessity depends on the actual demand/supply balance at a given time. People have already begun to take many measures to save electricity so that power can be directed to hospitals and generators for the patients who live on artificial respirators at home.

”People began to rush to supermarkets to stock water, food, etc. and the store shelves are rapidly going empty although I saw no panic at least in my area. And all the above is happening along with the constant aftershocks, which we've been feeling all day and night".

Yukiko has also translated a blogpost by a Japanese business woman, who happened to be in the Ibaraki Prefecture when the earthquake hit.

”I stayed at the station for about four hours until the sun set, when one of the train staff came out and began to announce, "No train will be operated today. The government has just advised us to recommend that you give up going home today and look for a place to stay tonight". The only people who were left at the station were those like myself who were unfamiliar with the area and had no place to stay overnight. It was too cold and windy to stay outdoors, so I asked a station attendant the direction toward hotels and began to walk. Fortunately, the first hotel I passed allowed me to stay in the lobby for free because the rooms were already full.

”Late at night, many employees of the hotel began to set up a table to provide us with food, a rice ball and hot miso soup. I was so grateful to the hotel staff and equally amazed by the refugees who were extremely calm. Mobile phones didn't work at all, so I stood in a queue for the phone in the lobby. At 3:00AM, I could finally tell my family that I was safe. As I hung up, the coin I had inserted came back - NTT (the biggest telephone company in Japan) had already made all phone calls free in the area.

”Japan is really a miracle. Under such a catastrophe, nothing like that happens. When the hotel was distributing food in the lobby to the obviously hungry refugees, some rice balls remained after everyone got the first round, but nobody would walk up there to get the second, probably for others who may come in later. The extensive queue where I stood to take the emergency bus service to the nearby station, everyone was very calm. Somewhere along the way, the queue split spontaneously into two lines; one was for those who wanted to get a seat even if waiting for the next bus, and the other was for the people who wanted to go back as soon as possible even if it meant standing.

”We really should be proud. In the past 24 hours, I saw nobody that was angry, shouting, or complaining in the wake of this unprecedented disaster. The only exception was a drunken dude who was challenging a station employee at Ueno. This country is really a miracle, and I sincerely hope other miracles will happen at this most difficult time.

BOB GOES TO CHINA

Despite everything, the world continues in its infinite absurdity

HONG KONG (AP) - Censors have cleared Bob Dylan to make his China debut despite worries that the country's authoritarian government would block his planned shows given the American folk icon's antiestablishment reputation. China's Ministry of Culture said in a notice posted on its website Thursday that Dylan will be allowed to perform in Beijing between March 30 and April 12. The website of the Dylan fan magazine ISIS reported earlier that Dylan was scheduled to perform in Beijing on April 6 and Shanghai on April 8, although Dylan's official website doesn't list those tour dates. The Chinese Ministry of Culture did not immediately post approval for the Shanghai show. A press official for the ministry declined comment on whether approval was imminent, asking a reporter to keep checking the ministry's website for updates. He would only give his surname as Zhou. The Chinese ticketing website MyPiao.com has already listed both the expected Beijing and Shanghai shows, but hasn't started accepting orders. The approval notice requires Dylan to stick to the program vetted by ministry officials, but didn't give specifics. Dylan's publicist at CBS Records didn't immediately respond to an e-mail seeking comment. The 69-year-old American legend was expected to meet resistance from Chinese censors considering his association with U.S. protest movements in the 1960s. Songs like "Blowin' in the Wind" and "The Times They Are a-Changin" were inspirations for the American civil rights and anti-war movements. This is Dylan's second attempt to perform in China in recent years. He was originally scheduled to play Beijing and Shanghai last year, but the dates were canceled. Mainland music fans blamed a financial dispute with Dylan's Taiwanese promoter. The promoter denied the allegations, saying the flash point was a demand from the Ministry of Culture for Dylan to sign a pledge promising "not to hurt the feelings of the Chinese people" during his performances. SMOKE ON THE WATER

My TV wasn’t showing a lurid disaster movie. This was the real thing. I even had friends downwind of the catastrophe. After the ominous and possibly apocalyptic explosion occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi atomic power plant, and one of its reactors threatened meltdown, the world waited with baited breath for genpatsu-shinsai – an enduring atomic disaster triggered by earthquake. Maybe the worst danger has now passed. As I write and post this it’s still unclear. But it’s all too plain that with a single – albeit massive – seismic flip the planet proved that it is not the passive victim of human exploitation and the philosphies of abstract greed. Is this the Gaia hypothesis in action? I don’t know. That might just be another human conceit to place our selves at the centre of the action, but I am not able dismiss it out of hand. All I know is the current devastation in Japan – and the fear of what might be, and still could be – must serve as a call to reevaluation of the narrow, ignorant, profit-driven aspirations of the corporations and the billionaire barons who currently attempt to govern us and negate and sideline any more realistic or intelligent considerations of how this world might be organized for the benefit of both humanity and its planetary home.

EVERYTHING ELSE SUDDENLY SEEMS VERY SMALL

Taking in the sheer scale of a massive natural disaster is never easy, and the devastation in Japan is no exception. To make the idea more manageable I can only reduce it to concern for friends and loved ones in the danger zone, and attempts to relate it to previous personal experience. I went through the 7.1 Northridge quake in Los Angeles, and that was quite scary enough. I can barely imagine how an 8.9 might have felt. Beyond that the disaster can only really create a sense of complete awe and reluctant awareness of just how small a human being can be when compared to the size of the entire planet with tectonic plates in motion. I already know that some of my friends in Japan are okay and I hope that others are also safe. That’s all I can really say except that it doesn’t quite seem the time for fun and gags, Frozdicks and gratuitous beauties. More a moment for sober reflection. I’ll see you all tomorrow.

HIS WEARINESS AMAZES HIM

I just missed two days of Doc40. Times come when the hill seems almost too steep to negotiate. Maybe it was all the excitements of personal archeology, or final weeks of the first real winter the I’ve lived through in years, or perhaps simply the survival work load bowed my back, or the time that’s been wasted for me by corporate entities that want to take over everything but cannot in reality plot an accurate flow chart for the proverbial piss up in the equally proverbial brewery. And then, on top of it, the TV news is relaying the first top-gun rattling of another fucking oil war, which fills me with a drained depression because, in addition to the graft and carnage, a hideous majority of modern conservatives would – in their ignorance – love to put capitalism economics on a permanent war footing.

OH MY GOD! (Some History Will Never Repeat Itself)

After waiting more than an unbelievable forty years to see the light of day or be seen by anyone, glorious grainy black and white footage of The Deviants in Hyde Park in September 1969 has finally been posted on YouTube by a crew called VideoHeads out of Amsterdam, led by the legendary Jack Henry Moore. It makes me very happy for a number of reasons, not least of which – after taking so much shit at the time as the allegedly “worst band in the world” – we actually kicked ass in front an estimated audience of 80 thousand in a manner that would have been wholly acceptable and even lauded some six or seven years later. Russell and Sandy are a rock solid foundation. Paul Rudolph’s guitar is mighty, and, as for me, when did you see jackknife shaman dancing the like which closes the show? Okay, so Rudolph and I engage, at one point, in some the atonal freeform bellowing that we called “mouth music”, but no one seems to have a problem with it. And we always attracted Hells Angels and crazy naked psychedelic women.

What you have up on YouTube right now is two sections of around nine minutes each, which – believe it or not – make two halves of one song – what the Pink Fairies would title “Uncle Harry’s Last Freakout”. I guess that was the real difference between the 1960s and 1970s. We could make a thrash last 17 minutes where the Clash or the Pistols would cut it off after three. And, by way of explanation for the opening harangue, the London Street Commune were staging a protest against homelessness by occupying the mansion at 144 Piccadilly at the other end of Park Lane. I’d been warned by the ranking cop at the park concert that my feet wouldn’t touch if I got into any kind of rant about the squatters who were about to be evicted in a massive police action. I just had to test the limits.

But don’t take my word for it. Here are some reminiscences from ukrockfestivals.com.

“The most memorable bit for me was when The Deviants were playing and a semi-nude young lady got up on stage and began to dance. As she started to remove the rest of her clothes there was a huge cheer from the crowd. Then a Hells Angel also got on stage and took his leather jacket off to another great cheer but then he put the jacket over the young lady's shoulders and guided her off the stage, this time to a chorus of boos from the disappointed audience. It was though, another wonderful afternoon in Hyde Park with great music and relaxed atmosphere.” – Steve Trusler

“I remember Al Stewart sitting down on a chair on stage and playing a mellow set of bedsitter folk songs. Quite a few people seemed to like him, but I found him rather wishy-washy (yawn). I remember that the Deviants were absolutely not wishy-washy ~ very aggressive and angry. I've heard them described as being the first real punk band. Works for me. But most of all I remember being entranced by the sublime musicality of the Soft Machine. A brilliant band. So totally outside. Imprinted on my memory is the sight of Robert Wyatt singing, and playing amazingly complex drum patterns, wearing just a pair of Y-fronts.” – Jeremy S.

THE NEW IMPROVED RED SKULL

This would appear to be a teaser of Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull in the upcoming Captain America movie, and I must, as a life long Red Skull aficionado (who has actually preserved a Capt. America v The Red Skull coffee mug intact since the 1970s) I give it my seal of approval. If you don’t count the Mekon, the Red Skull may well be my favorite comic book super villain, I mean, damn, he was personally constructed by no less than Adolf Hitler and pisses on Lex Luthor or The Joker.

“The Red Skull, Johann Schmidt (sometimes spelled Shmidt), was a former Nazi general officer and confidant of Adolf Hitler. He has been closely affiliated with HYDRA and is an enemy of S.H.I.E.L.D., the Avengers, and the interests of the United States and the free world in general. He was physically augmented by having his mind placed into the body of a clone of Captain America, the pinnacle of human perfection. He has been seemingly killed in the past, only to return time and time again to plague the world with schemes of world domination and genocide.” (Click here for more)

MOBY SEZ…

"I truly believe, as an institution, most major labels should just die. There was a time when the music business was incredibly monolithic and there were only two ways to get your music heard: sign to a major label, get your music played on MTV and get it played by big radio stations. "Thank God, that period has come to an end... Signing to a major, for 99.9% of the musicians on the planet, is the worst thing they could do... They've treated musicians badly. They've treated fans badly. They've treated the music badly, most importantly. For that reason, they either need to reinvent themselves or die quietly." (Click here for more)

FRIDAY? GOOD? WELL, ACTUALLY THE NEWS IS FUCKING TERRIBLE

“Oh shit.”

Each time I look at the news of the environment, it seems to be quantum degrees worse. (And to think we have to put ourselves through so much of this grief because super-rich bastards don’t want to pay tax and oil barons maximise profits.)

“Life on Earth is hurtling towards extinction levels comparable to those following the dinosaur-erasing asteroid impact of 65 million years ago, propelled forward by human activities, say scientists. This week, scientists from the University of California, Berkeley, announced that if current extinction rates continue unabated, and vulnerable species disappear, Earth could lose three-quarters of its species as soon as three centuries from now. "That's a geological eyeblink," said Nicholas Matzke, a graduate student at UC Berkeley and author of a paper describing the doom-and-gloom scenario. "Once you lose species, you don't get them back. It takes millions of years to rebound from a mass extinction event." This means that not, too far in the future, backyards might not be buzzing with bees, bombarded by seagulls or shaded by redwood trees. And while that might seem far off, species are already disappearing on a global scale. In recent history, we've lost the dodo bird and the passenger pigeon, the Javan tiger and the Japanese sea lion, and now, maybe the eastern cougar - declared extinct by the US Fish and Wildlife Service on Wednesday.” Click here for more

WE ARE THE ALIENS?

More evidence emerges that life on Earth was perhaps nudged into being by intervention from elsewhere. The popular report comes from Io9

“Meteors may have seeded the planet with life-giving ammonia. New research adds more weight to the claim that the lifeless Earth may have been helped in the right direction by a stray asteroid. Carbon-containing meteorites found in the Antarctic have nitrogen locked away inside them. And when these meteorites are treated with heat, pressure and water, they emit ammonium — which the researchers argue was the precursor to complex biomolecules that formed the first single-celled creatures. The exciting part? The nitrogen found in the meteorites is measurably different from any found on the Earth. If this hunk of rock isn't our ancient parent, it shows that one like it could very well have been.”

The scientific details come from PNAS

“Carbonaceous chondrites are asteroidal meteorites that contain abundant organic materials. Given that meteorites and comets have reached the Earth since it formed, it has been proposed that the exogenous influx from these bodies provided the organic inventories necessary for the emergence of life. The carbonaceous meteorites of the Renazzo-type family (CR) have recently revealed a composition that is particularly enriched in small soluble organic molecules, such as the amino acids glycine and alanine, which could support this possibility. We have now analyzed the insoluble and the largest organic component of the CR2 Grave Nunataks (GRA) 95229 meteorite and found it to be of more primitive composition than in other meteorites and to release abundant free ammonia upon hydrothermal treatment. The findings appear to trace CR2 meteorites’ origin to cosmochemical regimes where ammonia was pervasive, and we speculate that their delivery to the early Earth could have fostered prebiotic molecular evolution.”

I have, of course, a vested interest in all this since I now find myself working on a fiction epic in which all life here is supposedly a result of nephilim genetic mess-around. Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of DNA, dubbed the whole business “directed panspermia”. Click here for more.

“A fetus has been scheduled as a legislative witness in Ohio on a unique bill that proposes outlawing abortions after the first heartbeat can be medically detected. Faith2Action, the anti-abortion group that has targeted Ohio to pilot the measure, called the in-utero witness the youngest to ever come before the House Health Committee at 9 weeks old. Faith2Action president Janet Folger Porter said the intent is to show lawmakers who will be affected by the bill, which abortion rights groups oppose. Ohio Right to Life has not endorsed the measure. An aide to committee Chairman Lynn Wachtmann said a pregnant woman will be brought before the committee and an ultrasound image of her uterus will be projected onto a screen. The heartbeat of the fetus will be visible in color.”

THE MORDOR SPIN

Taking, for a moment, leave from grim reality we learn that Lord of the Rings has been rewritten with Sauron as the good guy…

“In Salon, Laura Miller writes about a novel by Yisroel Markov which tells the LOTR story from Mordor’s point of view. Here’s a summary of The Last Ringbearer: In Yeskov’s retelling, the wizard Gandalf is a war-monger intent on crushing the scientific and technological initiative of Mordor and its southern allies because science “destroys the harmony of the world and dries up the souls of men!” He’s in cahoots with the elves, who aim to become “masters of the world,” and turn Middle-earth into a “bad copy” of their magical homeland across the sea. Barad-dur, also known as the Dark Tower and Sauron’s citadel, is, by contrast, described as “that amazing city of alchemists and poets, mechanics and astronomers, philosophers and physicians, the heart of the only civilization in Middle-earth to bet on rational knowledge and bravely pitch its barely adolescent technology against ancient magic.”
