I'm just south of Seattle, & IT ISN'T SUPPOSED TO BE THAT FUCKING HOT AROUND HERE!!!
Records were broken & the news folk say its supposed to get worse... All the natives & elderly say they've never known anything like this. I've been out in heat where we could fry an egg on the sidewalk in Kansas, when I was a little kid & a number of times when I was older & visiting the hometown... but that heat isn't the same. It doesn't compare, the humidity & moisture make a monumental difference. I know people who say its over exaggerated about the heat spell here & they can suck my sweaty ass juice for all I care, I'd gladly sit outside in Dallas, sipping sun tea while wearing a hay hat & overalls than trying to cope with what's going on here. You sit in the shade & get little to no relief... everywhere with air-conditioning is crowded like nothing I've seen here before & any accessible water is even worse. You can only cool off enough to get down to a mediocre level of discomfort that's somewhat tolerable for maybe a half hour at a time, give or take. Unless of course you're have a lot of monetary affluence & can be accommodated with the sort of luxury only afforded to those who exploit others...
& Fuck, you can't find a fan or cheap electric air-conditioner anywhere for a decent price... but hey, that's the reality of supply & demand in an unregulated market.
We've got fatalities from the heat & these people go & jack up the prices instead of doing anything so humane as giving people a break in the midst of need & adversity. No... now would be the time to exploit others & build profits from their misery & vulnerability.
[As regards ol' hal9000] I would like, at this time, to offer in homage to the most terrifying bogey of my childhood, the following: My most sincerely hysterical, lung-emptying, throat-wrecking scream of soul-crushing, level 10, Howard-Phillips-Fucking-Lovecraft-HORROR!!!
The bottom line said it all... the rest was just the immediate basis from which I asserted my claim.
On the subject of the AI, HAL wasn't a villain... more a rampaging victim. You can't blame HAL for faulty programming and contradictory commands. HAL simply took the only logical course of action given the programming and circumstances of the scenario. Humans and their efforts and actions are to blame for everything that went wrong, most specifically, the White House was to blame for the contradiction in the orders HAL was programmed with.
Perhaps one might claim that the government is a corporate entity, especially in America, given that it is the largest employer in the country... hence, I say again, villainy is a corporate thing.
116 degrees yesterday...
