CLIVE THOMPSON & I ARE WORRIED ABOUT OCTOPI Check out what the man has to say and watch the truly amazing piece of video. If we ever piss them off we're toast.
The secret word is Tentacle
(Finally beta is making me post hot links like a grown up)
I'm a huge fan of cephalopods. There is every reason to believe that their brains can be as complex as our own, but in ways that we may never understand. Heard of an octopus that removed the lid to it's aquarium, crawled across a tabletop to another aquarium, removed the lid to that aquarium, climbed in, ate some bit of tasty prey, climbed out, replaced the lid, climbed back into it's own aquarium, replaced the lid. My first wife, the neurophysiologist, was watching a movie on Octopi, when she noticed that an octopus in the classroom aquarium was pressed up against the glass, and furiously changing colors "at" the octopus on the screen. I am not at all convinced that vertebrates are as clever or successful as we claim to be. In the event of a cepahalopod rebellion, I might consider becoming a traitor to my species.
