FASCISM IN ACTION

1936 style – In Spain it was serious with guns and bombs and slaughter – bullet holes in the cemetery wall – although the idea that Franco regarded the Spanish proletariat “an inferior race that had to be subjugated by sudden, uncompromising violence” has a very modern resonance..

"The leaders of the rebellion, Generals Mola, Franco and Queipo de Llano, regarded the Spanish proletariat in the same way as they did the Moroccan, as an inferior race that had to be subjugated by sudden, uncompromising violence. Thus they applied in Spain the exemplary terror they had learned in North Africa by deploying the Spanish Foreign Legion and Moroccan mercenaries, the Regulares, of the colonial army. Their approval of the grim violence of their men is reflected in [General] Franco's war diary of 1922, which lovingly describes Moroccan villages destroyed and their defenders decapitated. He delights in recounting how his teenage bugler boy cut off the ear of a captive. Franco himself led twelve Legionarios on a raid from which they returned carrying as trophies the bloody heads of twelve tribesmen (harquenos). The decapitation and mutilation of prisoners was common. When General Miguel Primo de Rivera visited Morocco in 1926, an entire battalion of the Legion awaited inspection with heads stuck on their bayonets. During the Civil War, terror by the [Spanish] African Army was similarly deployed on the Spanish mainland as the instrument of a coldly conceived project to underpin a future authoritarian regime."

2012 style – So far, in the 21st century they are mainly huffing, puffing, and mouthing off about decimating the proles. Charlie Fuqua, the Republican candidate for the Arkansas House of Representatives has written a book called God’s Law in which amid other philosophical gems calls for the death penalty for "rebellious children." He claims that the course of action involved in sentencing a child to death is described in the Bible and would involve judicial approval.

“The maintenance of civil order in society rests on the foundation of family discipline. Therefore, a child who disrespects his parents must be permanently removed from society in a way that gives an example to all other children of the importance of respect for parents. The death penalty for rebellious children is not something to be taken lightly. The guidelines for administering the death penalty to rebellious children are given in Deut 21:18-21: This passage does not give parents blanket authority to kill their children. They must follow the proper procedure in order to have the death penalty executed against their children. I cannot think of one instance in the Scripture where parents had their child put to death. Why is this so? Other than the love Christ has for us, there is no greater love then [sic] that of a parent for their child. The last people who would want to see a child put to death would be the parents of the child. Even so, the Scrpture [sic] provides a safe guard to protect children from parents who would wrongly exercise the death penalty against them. Even though this procedure would rarely be used, if it were the law of land, it would give parents authority. Children would know that their parents had authority and it would be a tremendous incentive for children to give proper respect to their parents.”

And they wonder why crystal meth is so teen-attractive?

“Dr. Michael Anderson, a Georgian pediatrician, considers prescription medicine the next great equalizer. The New York Times reports on the practice of prescribing stimulants to under-performing, low-income students to help them get an edge in schools. Anderson, "one of the more outspoken proponents" of this idea, admits to falsely diagnosing children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in order to prescribe medication—namely the drug Adderall—to treat the 'true' ailment: "poor academic performance in inadequate schools." Although a Moscow City Court suspended the two-year prison sentence on Yekaterina Samutsevich, those on Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Maria Alyokhina were confirmed and seemingly the two women are to be shipped off to some very unpleasant post-Soviet penal colony. The pressure must be maintained to get them freed and they must not be allowed to become the radical protest flavor of the month and quickly forgotten.

SCREW YOU AND THE CORPORATION YOU RODE IN ON

This rip of corporate capitalism by Steven Pearlstein from The Washington Post (really!) is kinda long but worth that space and the effort.

I am a corporate chief executive.
I am a business owner.
I am a private-equity fund manager.
I am the misunderstood superhero of American capitalism, single-handedly creating wealth and prosperity despite all the obstacles put in my way by employees, government and the media.
I am a job creator and I am entitled.
I am entitled to complain about the economy even when my stock price, my portfolio and my profits are at record levels.
I am entitled to a healthy and well-educated workforce, a modern and efficient transportation system and protection for my person and property, just as I am entitled to demonize the government workers who provide them.
I am entitled to complain bitterly about taxes that are always too high, even when they are at record lows.
I am entitled to a judicial system that efficiently enforces contracts and legal obligations on customers, suppliers and employees but does not afford them the same right in return.
I am entitled to complain about the poor quality of service provided by government agencies even as I leave my own customers on hold for 35 minutes while repeatedly telling them how important their call is.
I am entitled to a compensation package that is above average for my company’s size and industry, reflecting the company’s aspirations if not its performance.
I am entitled to have the company pay for breakfasts and lunches, a luxury car and private jet travel, my country club dues and home security systems, box seats to all major sporting events, a pension equal to my current salary and a full package of insurance — life, health, dental, disability and long-term care — through retirement.
I am entitled to have my earned income taxed as capital gains and my investment income taxed at the lowest rate anywhere in the world — or not at all.
I am entitled to inside information and favorable investment opportunities not available to ordinary investors. I am entitled to brag about my investment returns.
I am entitled to pass on my accumulated wealth tax-free to heirs, who in turn, are entitled to claim that they earned everything they have.
I am entitled to use unlimited amounts of my own or company funds to buy elections without disclosing such expenditures to shareholders or the public.
I am entitled to use company funds to burnish my own charitable reputation.
I am entitled to provide political support to radical, uncompromising politicians and then complain about how dysfunctional Washington has become.
Although I have no clue how government works, I am entitled to be consulted on public policy by politicians and bureaucrats who have no clue about how business works.
I am entitled to publicly criticize the president and members of Congress, who are not entitled to criticize me.
I am entitled to fire any worker who tries to organize a union. I am entitled to break any existing union by moving, or threatening to move, operations to a union-hostile environment.
I am entitled to a duty of care and loyalty from employees and investors who are owed no such duty in return.
I am entitled to operate my business free of all government regulations other than those written or approved by my industry.
I am entitled to load companies up with debt in order to pay myself and investors big dividends — and then blame any bankruptcy on over-compensated workers.
I am entitled to contracts, subsidies, tax breaks, loans and even bailouts from government, even as I complain about job-killing government budget deficits.
I am entitled to federal entitlement reform.
I am entitled to take credit for all the jobs I create while ignoring any jobs I destroy.
I am entitled to claim credit for all the profits made during a booming economy while blaming losses or setbacks on adverse market or economic conditions.
I am entitled to deny knowledge or responsibility for any controversial decisions made after my departure from the company, even while profiting from such decisions if they enhance shareholder value.
I am entitled to all the rights and privileges of running an American company, but owe no loyalty to American workers or taxpayers.
I am entitled to confidential information about my employees and customers while refusing even to list the company’s phone number on its Web site.
I am entitled to be treated with deference and respect by investors I mislead, customers I bamboozle, directors I manipulate and employees I view as expendable.
I am entitled to be lionized in the media without answering any questions from reporters.
I am entitled to the VIP entrance.
I am entitled to everything I have and more that I still deserve.

SUNDAY BREAKFAST

This is a grilled cheese sandwich. Back when I was a gentleman alcoholic living in New York City I would frequently stroll down to Dave’s Diner on Canal Street – just around the corner from the legendary Mudd Club – for a grilled cheese, and maybe an egg cream (that contained neither egg nor cream.) Dave’s made about the best of both in the city and I found them a great comfort during the Reagan era and also passable hangover relief. I suspect, however, that it will take more than a grilled cheese sandwich – even if I could get a proper one in Brighton – to console me if Obama continues to fuck up and the world is placed in the care of Mitt the Multi-Millionaire Mutant Mormon. I never had much time for Harry Truman, a nasty atom-bomb-dropping little bastard, but, some time around 1950, he made this very apt summation of the Republican Party only, But I fear today it is ten times worse.

“Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke. They stand four-square for the American home--but not for housing. They are strong for labor--but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights. They favor minimum wage--the smaller the minimum wage the better. They endorse educational opportunity for all--but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools. They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine--for people who can afford them. They consider electrical power a great blessing--but only when the private power companies get their rake-off. They think American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people. And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.”
